The U.S. lawmakers are in Russia in the build-up to a planned summit in Helsinki between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, TASS news agency reported.

Relations between Russia and the USA have sunk to their lowest point in decades amid United States sanctions over alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. election and Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The head of a USA congressional delegation visiting Russian Federation said Tuesday he hopes for "a new day" in repairing relations between Russian Federation and the U.S. The upcoming and first one-on-one summit between the two leaders is expected revolve around major issues such as Trump's exit from the Iran deal, the warming in relations between the US and nuclear-armed North Korea, growing USA sanctions against Russian Federation and the seven-year war in Syria, where the US and Russian Federation are backing rival military campaigns.

"The Russian president has repeatedly stated and explained to his interlocutors that the issue of Crimea can not be and never will be on the agenda, as Crimea is an integral part of Russia", he said, adding that Moscow is open to dialogue and compromise on other issues.

"So far there is no such meeting on the President's agenda, but we know that the American legislators have planned very extensive meetings with their colleagues."

"We are competitors, but we don't necessarily need to be adversaries", said Shelby, a Republican senator from Alabama, in televised comments. Another summit is due on July 16th in Helsinki still aimed at world peace. He expressed hope that their visit would symbolize a rebuilding of relations between the USA and Russian federal legislatures. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

He said the Kremlin was "very satisfied" that the senators were visiting Russian Federation.

Of all the national security issues that would be discussed in the American-Russian summit, the bet is that the Middle East would be the one region where American and Russian positions would be close, contrary to the situation in Ukraine, for instance.
