Jackson family patriarch, Joe Jackson, dies at age 89

TMZ reports that Jackson passed away around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in Los Angeles while surrounded by his wife, Katherine, and some of his children and grandchildren. Joe, who was 89, was hospitalised in June with terminal cancer. The Jackson family patriarch reportedly died today, and his loved ones were by his side for their final goodbyes.

People Magazine's Karen Mizoguchi's report of Joe Jackson's death included the note that he "was born on July 26, 1928, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas and had a series of health problems".

Jermaine told the Daily Mail June 20 that he and his siblings were struggling to get information on their father's condition. In 1975, Joe Jackson oversaw a new deal for the band-now renamed The Jacksons-with Epic Records, the label for which Michael would ultimately record the massively successful albums Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and risky.

By 2005, no longer involved in his children's careers, Joseph Jackson had launched a boot camp for aspiring hip-hop artists, promoting lyrics without vulgarity and sponsoring competitions for young artists from across the country.

A tweet from Joe Jackson's official Twitter account caused more speculation about his health.

At the same time, he was also a controversial figure who wound up estranged from the kids - including King of Pop Michael Jackson - he set on the path to stardom.

The tweet came from his official account, though it should be noted his granddaughter Paris Jackson replied, saying it's a attractive tweet, but she doubts whether he wrote it himself.

Joe's family journey was highlighted in the ABC mini-series, The Jacksons: An American Dream, in 1992, and in VH1's Man in the Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story in 2004.

Joe agreed to it but, far from apologising, he said his methods made his kids successful and kept them out of jail.

Joe Jackson eventually moved the family from Gary to a mansion in Encino, California.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Paris said: "They always say, 'Time heals.' But it really doesn't". Michael Jackson told Oprah Winfrey in a 1993 interview that he was so afraid of his father he would sometimes vomit when he saw him.
