Kim is the most senior North Korean visitor to the United States since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok visited Washington in 2000 to meet President Bill Clinton.

The president, however, did not want to raise expectations. Still, he says he doesn't yet know whether the meeting will proceed on June 12.

Trump cautioned that while he hopes a planned summit in Singapore on June 12 between the US and North Korea is still in the cards, he wants it to be a "meaningful" meeting.

Trump indicated he's continuing to use a carrot-and-stick approach to diplomacy. "We call on all involved sides to fully appreciate their responsibility for not allowing this very important but still fragile process to break down", he said, adding that Russian Federation was ready to contribute to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

"They want to develop as a country", Trump said.

Kim was greeted earlier by White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who together with CIA Korea chief Andy Kim led the official into the White House Diplomatic Reception Room, then along the Colonnade and past the Rose Garden to the Oval Office. "You're talking about 70 years".

Trump said there were "hundreds of new sanctions ready to go on" but they won't be imposed "until such time as the talks break down".

"It'll be a beginning, I don't say, and I've never said it happens in one meeting".

Kim's arrival in Washington in a small caravan of SUV's from NY came a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that he was confident negotiations with Pyongyang were "moving in the right direction". What was in the "very nice" letter? Oh, would you like to see what was in that letter? How much? How much? "So I look forward to seeing what's in the letter". "I haven't opened it", he said.

"I am sure that he will achieve the final victory and realize the reunification of Korea without fail", Assad added.

The official arrived just after 1 p.m. ET on the White House South Lawn, where foreign dignitaries are typically received by the President. The President's hand size is something he has previously defended. Chang said Trump needs to secure "the strictest inspection regime on Earth".

"This summit will be historic by its very nature".
