The lava also vaporised Hawaii's largest freshwater lake.

So too have airborne volcanic glass fibers, called "Pele's Hair", wispy strands carried aloft by the wind from lava fountains and named for the volcanic goddess of Hawaiian myth.

"This is the hottest lava we've seen during this eruption", Wendy Stovall, a scientist with USGS told CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.

More recently a huge river of lava that has crept several miles across the landscape to the eastern tip of the island engulfed two entire seaside housing subdivisions - Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland.

The lava is "enough to cover Manhattan 6.5 feet deep" and fill 11.3 million average dump trucks, it said. The new land in Kapoho Bay is now owned by the state, but the peninsula won't look like the farmland that dominates that region of the Big Island anytime soon. Shaded purple areas indicate lava flows erupted in 1840, 1955, 1960 and 2014-2015.

The volcanic gas and ash emission could affect air quality across the central and southern half of Big Island, Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said.

"Rainfall really makes a difference", Hawaii Volcanoes National Park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said. "So, it's usually ohia and ferns that are the first pioneers of those new lava flows". The laze plume rises from the ocean entry and combines with rain clouds.

An explosion at the volcano's summit yesterday afternoon caused a thick ash plume to reach 10,000 feet above sea level. At least 117 homes have already been taken by lava in the Lanipuna Gardens and Leilani Estates neighborhoods where lava surfaced more than a month ago. This activity continues to feed the lava channel flowing northeast before turning westward toward Kapoho where it transforms in a very broad lava flow that by now nearly entirely covered Kapoho and Vacationland and filled up Kapoho Bay.
