Meeting with Kim to Take Place as Planned

The announcement reversed an earlier decision from Trump to cancel the meeting on the North's nuclear program.

Kim Yong Chol is the highest ranking North Korean official to visit the United States in almost two decades.

Invoking the possibility of a secure and prosperous future, Mr. Pompeo made clear that the United States is looking for the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", a formulation to which North Korea has yet to agree. Mr Trump says the summit on 12 June is back on. The North Korean envoy hand-delivered a letter to Trump from the North Korean leader, after a day of talks in NY with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

It was an extraordinary change in tone from a president who a year ago threatened to rain "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea because of the threat its nuclear weapons and missiles posed to the United States. After Trump received the letter, he announced that the June 12 summit with North Korea was on again in Singapore.

Trump had called off plans for a summit in a letter to Kim on May 24, complaining of "the tremendous anger and open hostility" in comments from North Korea.

"If it happens, we'll certainly be ready", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said at the daily briefing Wednesday.

Now that the summit is back on, Trump faces pressure to ensure that it goes off without a hitch.

A meeting with Trump would be a huge win for Kim, and insiders say the U.S. and North Korea aren't close to reaching a deal that would make it worth the US's time.

Until Kim agrees to denuclearization, Trump added, the US sanctions on North Korea will remain as they are now.

It said Kim wanted to meet Trump but didn't make any concessions or threats, as have marked his previous communications.

"We'll be meeting June 12 in Singapore". Trump said that Xi "has helped me quite a bit with this". Kim Yong Chol gave Trump a letter from Kim Jong Un, which Trump described as a "very nice". I never said it goes in one meeting. "We're going to continue to shoot for June 12th".

China, North Korea's main trading partner and a key ally, said on Thursday that it supported and encouraged the "emerging good faith" between the United States and North Korea.

After a almost 80-minute-long meeting in the Oval Office, Trump, Pompeo, and Kim Yong Chol posed for a photo opp. "They seem to have figured that North Korea is not giving up its nukes and settled for pageantry". Through one of its key front companies alone, the intelligence agency was responsible for roughly half of the country's exports of arms and military materiel, Treasury said then.
