'National Police Week' to honor fallen officers

The memorial outside the state capitol now lists 277 fallen officers.

Williams, U.S. Attorney for the District of OR, recognize the service and sacrifice of federal, state, local, and tribal police officers on the occasion of National Police Week, and commented Monday on the FBI's 2017 Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted report. The Museum is working to expand and enrich the relationship shared by law enforcement and the community through the Museum's educational journeys, immersive exhibitions, and insightful programs.

Officers and judicial system officials gathered outside of the Pitt County Courthouse to take part in the annual Pitt County Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

Allery was fatally shot by 28-year-old Melvin Gene Delong, of Belcourt, after a pursuit on January 18, 2017.

The Santa Maria Police Department is inviting locals to a memorial ceremony and fundraiser luncheon Wednesday. And so far in 2018, 48 officers have died in the line of duty nationwide, with over half of the deaths resulting from gun-related incidents.

"It's necessary that our officers continue to hear that, hear the names, understand what's happened before them", Markle said.

During the service, the names of all law enforcement officers from the Mountain State killed in the line of duty since 1863 will be read. Too often do we pick apart and harass the roles of society rather than acknowledge our safety and freedom.

Clarinda Police Chaplain Dr. Richard Iske officiates the service, with the Clarinda American Legion Sergy Post 98 providing a volley salute and taps.

(Clarinda) - Clarinda authorities invite the public to a special event remembering fallen law enforcement officers. I see them at times when I know, that after they leave me, they're going to go and put themselves in harm's way; serious harms way. Six Iowa peace officers killed in the line of duty were honored for making the ultimate sacrifice. Those law enforcement officers traveled hundreds of miles from across the country.

The proclamation recognized "the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting communities and safeguarding democracy".

According to a press release, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of IN works closely with law enforcement and community members to provide specialized training and initiatives to reduce violent crime. The families of the late officers Lesley Zerebny and Gil Vega are still struggling every day.
