The Tigers outhit Kansas City 12-5.
I feel that it is safe to say the only team from the AL Central that will be going to the postseason this year will be the Cleveland Indians. They've lost 3.1 units for gamblers taking the moneyline in the season's early going and 1.9 units ATS. Pujols is the fourth player ever to reach 3,000 hits and 600 home runs, joining Willie Mays, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez. The Tigers have averaged just 3.93 rpg on the road, compared to 5.00 rpg at home.
Left-hander Matthew Boyd is getting the nod for the visiting Tigers.
In his career, he has gone 38-36 with a 3.81 ERA in 110 starts on the road and 13-16 with a 4.33 ERA in 42 starts during the month of May, plus he is 28-22 with a3.82 ERA in 73 games (72 starts) in the daytime, while against the Royals he has gone 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in six games (five starts), including 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five starts here at Kauffman Stadium.
Detroit has posted 20.6 Runs + Hits + Errors per game over its last 10 outings and 24.0 over its last five. The bullpen has managed an ERA of 4.79, along with a K/9 of 8.29.
Jason Day: Grinds out victory at Wells Fargo Championship
Day, who has had troubles with the closing hole in the past, then hit an iron off the 18th tee, knowing he had a two-shot lead. Peter Malnati (67-68) was at his best over the last three holes yesterday and finished with a 3-under 68 for a one-shot lead.
The Tigers and Royals spent most of the afternoon trading stiff jabs. He is coming off a victory Saturday at Baltimore, giving up three runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout over 6 1/3 innings. He is still hitting just.235 on the year, but he is 2nd on the team in RBIs with 15. He has made 18 starts and three relief appearances against Kansas City.
In the visiting dugout, Detroit's pitching staff allowed 4.6 runs per game and its starters own a 3.73 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 7.03 K/9. The Royals have averaged 4.00 rpg, while posting a 5.36 ERA here at home for the year.
Moustakas staked the Royals to a 3-0 lead after the first three innings. Junis is 2-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA across two starts against Detroit this year. Its starters have an ERA of 4.68, a WHIP of 1.34 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 7.3.
Detroit right-fielder Nicholas Castellanos had two doubles and a triple for his second multi-extra base hit game of the season. Boyd has a 14-24 record with a 5.20 ERA in 64 games (60 starts) in the majors. The pen for the Royals ranks 30th in the league with a 6.07 ERA.
Everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit except for Cheslor Cuthbert, and he came within a couple feet of a home run in the seventh inning. "He just started running to first after he hit the one and felt his hammy and strained it, just got him off the field". That is not a typo. That's a bad feeling right there, with the game on the line, but Greeney (closer Shane Greene) picked me up right there. I will go with the Royals in this one.
