Lava fountains spew aggressively from Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano

Images showed lava spurting into the sky from a crack in a road and a line of lava snaking through a forest. Neighborhoods downhill from the vents were at risk of being covered up.

Fire officials conducted another safety sweep of homes Sunday and watched helplessly as the lava engulfed a green single-story house.

Adding to the chaos, the island's largest natural disaster in more than 40 years, a magnitude-6.9, struck near the south part of the volcano, following a smaller quake that rattled the same area. The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Puʻu ʻŌʻō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano. When it appeared, she freed her chickens, loaded her dogs into her truck and evacuated with her daughter and grandson.

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has been erupting continuously since 1983. Garnett said she took a carload of belongings to a storage unit but wasn't allowed to make a second trip back to get her animals. "It's hard to keep up".

Demian Barrios and Ikaika Marzo are among a handful of residents who are choosing to stick around Leilani Estates to document volcanic activity via social media.

Water restrictions remained in place Saturday for Leilani Estates, Kapoho Beach Lots, Lanipuna Gardens, Pohoiki Bay Estates, Green Lake Farm Lots, Vacationland and all customers on Pohoiki and Kalapana Kapoho Beach roads. But scientists said new vents could form, and it was impossible to know where. Officials warned of the dangers of spattering hot rock and high levels of sulfuric gas.

Breathing large amounts of sulfur dioxide could result in burning of the nose and throat and breathing difficulties, the agency says.

"You have to ask Pele", Steve Clapper said when asked whether he had any idea when he'd return to his Leilani Estates home. It tends to ooze lava from fissures in its sides, which often gives residents at least a few hours' warning before it reaches their property.

The number of lava-venting fissures in the neighbourhood grew overnight from eight to as many as 10, Stovall said, though some have quieted at various points.

When it comes to terminology, there's a difference between a lava flow and a volcanic fissure.

On Saturday, between 200 and 250 people were registered at the shelter in Pahoa Community Center, and about 28 at the shelter in Keaau.

No injuries or deaths were reported, but Hawaii Governor David Ige activated the Hawaii National Guard to provide emergency help.

Officials couldn't predict how long Thursday's eruption may last.

A new fissure spewed lava up to 230 feet (70 m) into the air and new cracks opened on a highway in the Leilani Estates area, about a dozen miles (19 km) from where the Kilauea volcano erupted on Thursday, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement on Saturday.

"There's more magma in the system to be erupted". "Usually it's not long lasting. And so we are watching that very, very closely", Miklius said. The vents were created by hundreds of small earthquakes that have jolted the region since Monday.

Amber Makuakane, 37, a teacher and single mother of two, said her three-bedroom house in Leilani Estates was destroyed by lava.
