Most parts of England and Wales will enjoy temperatures in the 20s throughout the weekend, with the best of the weather predicted for the South East.

Ms Yeomans said: 'Monday should be the warmest Spring Bank Holiday on record, the highest temperature on record is 23°C but we are expecting it to be 28°C on Monday.

Northern England will be slightly cooler at the beginning of the bank holiday weekend with some cloud expected but the skies will be brighter on Sunday and Monday, when the temperature will be 23C or 24C.

RAC traffic spokesman Rod Dennis said: "While wall-to-wall sunshine might not be on the cards for everyone this bank holiday weekend, many will still be keen to make the most of the early May warmth by escaping in the vehicle to spend time with family or friends".

However, Bank Holiday Monday is set to be the hottest on record.

But while the weekend is looking lovely, there is likely to be a sting in the tail with cloud, rain and chilly temperatures arriving from midweek.
