This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day across North America and the world - a day where participating comic shops give away comic books to anyone coming into their stores.

A recently remodeled Legends Comics will mark the event with thousands of comic books to distribute, discounts, artists, refreshments and a live remote, said Donnie "Big Wig" Wiggins, one of the store's owners along with J. Harrison.

Wizard's Asylum will also hold an event for Free Comic Book Day, according to the store manager, Bryan Alcorn.

For the third year running Hāwera Plus Library plans to give away hundreds of free comics and have organised a number of activities including kids' crafts, face painting and a Cosplay competition.

Mr. Toast artist Todd Webb will also be signing and doing sketches, as well as local artist Greg Steele.

Free Comic Book Day kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.at An Open Book, 209 Jefferson Street South, Wadena.

If this article was being written like a comic book, the following words would surely be printed in extra bold lettering in a jagged and excited scream bubble: Free Comic Book Day is coming.

"We were surprised to see comic enthusiasts drawn from throughout Taranaki, with three carloads making the trip from New Plymouth", she said.

"We have a lot of things for everybody", Wiggins said.

At noon, St. Ambrose Assistant Professor Brittany Tullis will discuss the evolution of comic books.

While library visitors are welcome to pick up a free comic, we also invite them to celebrate the joy of comic books, by enjoying events for the whole family, supported by the Friends of the Bettendorf Public Library.
