Instead, he'll have to "settle" for something else: Amnesty International's Ambassador of Conscious Award, which the human-rights organization bestowed upon him Saturday in a ceremony in Amsterdam.

In his acceptance speech at the service at Amsterdam, Kaepernick - who was criticized by President donaldtrump, members of the USA military and many NFL followers for filming his protests throughout the playing the national anthem before games - clarified authorities killings of African-Americans and also Latinos in the "lawful lynchings".

Those protests attracted the ire of President Trump, who predicted to fire people.

In six National Football League seasons, Kaepernick owns a 28-30 record as a starter, and he led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII during the 2012 season where they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.

The award, given to Kaepernick in an Amsterdam ceremony, is handed out each year to "individuals and groups who speak out for justice", Amnesty says on its website, with an aim to "create debate, encourage public action and raise awareness of human rights issues".

In response to the player demonstrations, the National Football League agreed to commit $90 million over the next seven years to social justice causes in a plan. Reid, by all estimations a starting-caliber safety, remains a free agent after assuming Kaepernick's role as the NFL's most proud protestor last season.

Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty said Saturday that Kaepernick is "an athlete who is now widely recognized for his activism because of his refusal to ignore or accept racial discrimination".

"Eric introducing me for this prestigious award brings me nice pleasure", Kaepernick stated.

No matter our stance on Kaepernick's politics, he should be given some level of respect for said work and for his fight for equality in the United States.
