Ford Australia has confirmed that the all-new Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch will make its way down under in the second quarter of 2019.

Building off its popularity, Ford also is announcing Mustang is coming to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series - professional stock auto racing's top league - for the first time, beginning at Daytona in February.

While other engine configurations are eligible under the Gen2 regulations, the Mustang will continue to use the current 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8.

"We're proud to announce that Ford Australia, with our Ford Performance global team, is working with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing to homologate Mustang for 2019".

The 2018 model Mustang, which was also unveiled on Tuesday, was deemed by Ford the flawless fit for the Gen2 regulations. "I know Australians, New Zealanders and our fans around the world will be just as excited as I am to see the Mustang take to our tracks in the world's best Touring vehicle racing".

Since global exports began in 2015, through December 2017, Ford has sold 418 000 Mustangs around the world.

Talks to bring Ford back into the Supercars fold started late a year ago. Last year Ford Australia backflipped on its plan to release an official 500kW Roush supercharger kit for the Mustang. "Mustang is Ford's halo brand and with its 54th birthday it keeps recording more milestones, but I think having a Mustang Supercar on the grid is going to be a very significant one for the brand in this country".

Dick Johnson, co-owner of DJR Team Penske, added, "Throughout the entire history of this team, we've never run anything but a Ford, and this announcement today is fantastic".

To celebrate Mustang's popularity, and to mark its 54anniversary, Ford Middle East unveiled a stunning mosaic made of up of hundreds of regional Mustang fan photos neatly arranged to form the Pony car's iconic emblem, an exceptionally unique creation presented for the first time ever in the region.

Their racing Mustang will be modelled off the new 2019 model which will go on sale in Australia and New Zealand from July.

"We're combining America's favorite sports auto with America's top stock vehicle racing series", said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

"The fact that we will be able to build and race Mustang in the 2019 Supercars Championship is music to my ears".
