The NFL and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) announced the results of the annual laboratory study which assesses the performance of helmets worn by NFL players.

As noted by Jenny Vrentas of SI.com, that group includes the Riddell VSR4 helmet that has been the preferred helmet of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over the course of his career. "And the objective of continuing to rank the helmets, and the goal of the joint decision to prohibit certain helmets this year, is to increase that continued movement into better-performing helmets".

The NFL will put this poster in each locker room so players can make informed decisions about their helmets.

One manufacturer of several models on the list of prohibited helmets, Rawlings, no longer manufactures football helmets.

The top-rated helmets for player safety in the study were the VICIS Zero 1 models of 2017 and 2018.

Crossbench senator Derryn Hinch also backed the Greens' push, saying "you'd ban alcohol and cigarettes" too if the argument was that it's bad for you.

The announcement comes amid a push by the sport's leaders to reduce the number of concussions suffered by players after data showed an increase last season in concussions.

The details of enforcement of the rule, hailed by National Football League rule-makers as a significant change created to take players' use of the helmet as a weapon out of the sport, are being worked out and are to be completed at next month's meeting of the owners in Atlanta.

A spokesman said the NFLPA had no comment beyond what was reported in Monday's helmet press release.

Riddell and Schutt both manufacture models that tested among the best helmets in the rankings.

"The objective of the continuation to rank helmets and the joint decision with the players' association to prohibit is to increase that movement into better performing helmets".

'We think that is an important move, and we think that will improve player health and safety.
