Not only did they confirm the arrival of the 2019 Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch and reveal the next generation Mustang and Ranger Raptor; they also gave Supercars fans what they've been begging for, for months. That model will be retired once the new Mustang is ready.
Rumours suggest the teams are hoping to have a development vehicle ready for demonstration laps at the 2018 Bathurst 1000, but team principals Ryan Story (DJR Team Penske) and Tim Edwards (Tickford) said it is too early in the program to put a timeline on the car's first appearance.
At the same time, Whickman confirmed when questioned about the rest of the Fiesta range that the brand wouldn't continue with the Fiesta, beyond the Fiesta ST.
The announcement signifies Ford's biggest commitment to Australian motorsport since its departure from Supercars in 2014.
That's right, the Ford Mustang will be on the grid for the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, with the company's Ford Performance brand set to work with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing to make Ford fans dreams come true.
Ford returning to Supercars in 2019 with Mustang
"As a Ford Performance model that's raced around the world, it's fitting that Australia's most popular sports vehicle should be on our race tracks".
It will be the official Recovery Vehicle for Supercars and its support classes, including the new ECB SuperUtes Series, in which the dual-cab 4x4 Ranger already races. Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the launch.
"Reality is the market is changing, we're seeing less passenger cars and more SUVs and pickups".
Development of the new Mustang Supercar has already begun with Tickford, DJR Team Penske and Ford Performance working together to turn the road auto into a racer.
At least six Mustangs will race in 2019 with Tickford Racing entering four and DJR Team Penske a pair.
