President Trump's lawyers filed two motions on Friday in United States District Court in California in a public legal fight that Ms. Clifford, whose stage name is Stormy Daniels, started last week.

Clifford's attorney, Michael Avenatti, told The Associated Press his client had been "physically threatened", but he didn't provide details.

He said he would "not confirm or deny" if the threats came from the president himself.

Mr Avenatti said Ms Clifford would reveal all during a CBS 60 Minutes interview to be broadcast in the United States on March 25.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters she had no knowledge of the situation and hadn't spoken with the President about it.

But, she said, "obviously we take the safety and security of any person seriously" and "certainly would condemn anyone threatening any individual". Cohen has not explained why he made the payment and has not said if Trump was aware of it. She however violated the non -disclosure agreement claiming that Trump did not sign it and that made freed her from the obligation.

The lawsuit refers to her beginning an "intimate relationship" with Trump in 2006 that continued "well into the year 2007".

In a Friday evening court filing, an attorney for Cohen sought to move the case from a state-level court to federal court in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the President have claimed in court papers filed by his lawyers on Friday that the actress could be up for damages of at least $US20 million ($26 million) for breaching a confidentiality agreement she had with Mr Trump's lawyers.

For the first time, Trump has joined the case, and the filing says, "Mr. Trump intends to pursue his rights to the fullest extent permitted by law".

"The filing today is yet another bullying tactic from the president and Mr. Cohen", Avenatti said on Twitter. The American people are witness to their President trying to force a private citizen to go for a closed door settlement when she wants to tell the world the truth. He said the women had "strikingly similar stories to my client".

Clifford has alleged she had affair with Trump that began in 2006 and lasted several months.

Mr Cohen admitted he had paid Ms Daniels $US130,000 ($166,000) of his own money, using a home equity account, as part of the deal just before the 2016 election.
