The Bills allowed a league-high 18 rushing touchdowns and an AFC-worst 1,487 rush yards after trading Marcell Dareus in Week 8 last season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Lotulelei, 28, is a five-year vet of the Carolina Panthers. Williams is unsigned and has also contemplated the possibility of retiring.

The Buffalo Bills had hoped all along that their leader from the 2017 season, defensive tackle Kyle Williams, would return to them for at least one more season as they chased more than just a spot in the playoffs. He's listed at 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds and fills an immediate hole on Buffalo's defensive front.

The former University of Utah standout and 14th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft missed only one game and made 75 regular-season starts for Ron Rivera's club in Carolina.

Former general manager Dave Gettleman, who was sacked in July, picked defensive tackle Vernon Butler in the first round of the 2016 draft, knowing it would be tough to give big contracts to both Short and Lotulelei.

Beane has already completed two trades over the past week in dealing quarterback Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland and sending starting offensive tackle Cordy Glenn to Cincinnati.

Lotulelei has recorded 141 tackles and 11.5 sacks in his career. He has been a starter for all 12 of his previous seasons.
