According to an Federal Bureau of Investigation statement quoted by the BBC, a person close to Cruz contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation tip-line on January 5 to provide "information about Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behaviour, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting".
Since January 2013, there have been at least 291 school shootings across the country - an average of one a week, according to non-profit group Everytown for Gun Safety.
