Nikolas Cruz, 19, is charged with committing multiple murders on Wednesday at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, a Miami suburb. He instructs that Trump needs to tell his Republican buddies in Congress that what we need are "real laws that do everything possible to keep assault rifles out of the hands of people that are going to shoot our kids".

Another student said Cruz had been banned from carrying a backpack at the school before he was expelled and would carry his belongings in a plastic bag.

According to an Federal Bureau of Investigation statement quoted by the BBC, a person close to Cruz contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation tip-line on January 5 to provide "information about Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behaviour, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting".

Since January 2013, there have been at least 291 school shootings across the country - an average of one a week, according to non-profit group Everytown for Gun Safety.
