Scores are measured in "problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100)", so the lower the score, the more dependable the vehicle, although problems can include anything from powertrain malfunctions to paint flaws and wonky Bluetooth connections.

Porsche, Buick, Infiniti and Kia round out the top five brands in the survey. Toyota Motor Corp cars won in six of the 19 categories in an annual auto industry reliability survey published today, while Fiat Chrysler Automobiles trailed in the bottom three of the report's main rankings.

Buick came in first in the mass market segment, with 116 reported problems per 100 vehicles, 10 less than in 2017. Overall vehicle dependability improves 9% from 2017, the first time the industry score has improved since 2013.

Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury brand ranked top in a dependability survey for the seventh consecutive year, major US market research firm J.D. Power and Associates said Wednesday. The survey covers 177 specific issues collected into eight major vehicle categories, including exterior, features/ controls/ displays, seats, interior, the driving experience, audio/communication/ entertainment/ navigation, HVAC, and engine and transmission.

"For the most part, automotive manufacturers continue to meet consumer' vehicle dependability expectations", Sargent said in a statement. "A nine percent improvement is extremely impressive, and vehicle dependability is, without question, at its best level ever".

Fiat is the most improved brand, with owners indicating 106 fewer PP100 than in 2017. Dodge and Nissan also earn their best rankings ever. These awardees are Lexus CT, Lexus ES, Lexus GS, Lexus RX, Toyota Prius and Toyota Tacoma.

The Dodge Challenger, Ford Super Duty, Ford Expedition, Honda Odyssey, Hyundai Tucson, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, and Audi Q3 also were singled out for segment awards.
