On Thursday, President Donald Trump speculated he and Kim Jong Un - the North Korean leader whose regime called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard" and whose nation the U.S.is attempting to strangle economically - had a "very good relationship". I'm not saying I have or haven't. "I think you people are surprised".

"I'm a very flexible person", Trump added. In his New Year's address last week, Kim said he has a "nuclear button" that could fire weapons anywhere in the United States, and Trump responded that he has a much bigger and more powerful "nuclear button". The talks took place against a backdrop of increasingly strict US -led sanctions and bellicose rhetoric directed against the North, framed by the December 22 UN Security Council sanctions and a barrage of aggressive tweets from President Trump. "I don't want to comment on it".

Some U.S. officials have suggested that North Korea was using diplomatic overtures to try to drive a wedge between Washington and ally Seoul and did not intend to engage seriously.

Asked whether he has spoken with the North Korean leader, Trump told the newspaper: "I don't want to comment on it".

North and South Korea held their first talks in two years on Tuesday.

"We will be discussing maritime interdiction", Hook said, raising the idea of an naval embargo to help enforce the already draconian United Nations sanctions on Kim's regime.

"And maritime interdiction helps us to disrupt resources".

As such, North Korea's neighbours China and Russian Federation are not invited, and many have questioned the utility of a conference where such influential regional players are absent.

"At a minimum, he thinks that warning the Chinese about a preemptive strike would motivate Beijing to force Kim to shut down the programs that threaten the US", the official said.

China sees the Trump administration's discussion of military options as a psychological game to force Beijing and Moscow to maintain pressure on Pyongyang, but they were making crisis preparations just in case, Zhao said.

"China has the same policy goal, in terms of ensuring that North Korea does not become a nuclear weapon state and acquire the means to deliver a nuclear warhead".
