Chelsea Manning files to run for US Senate in Maryland

President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence to time served as one of his final acts in office.

After her release from prison, she moved to the suburbs in Maryland.

The age requirement to run for U.S. Senate is 30 years old.

It was the biggest leak of classified documents in history. Manning did not think releasing almost three-quarters of a million documents would threaten national security. She was convicted by court-martial in 2013 of espionage and other offenses for furnishing more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, an worldwide organization that publishes information from anonymous sources.

In his statement, Obama said that Manning's sentence was "disproportionate" to those faced by other whistleblowers. In July, she dissented Trump's choice to forbid transgender individuals from the military at a rally at the White House.

When the military denied Manning's request for hormones, Manning tried to commit suicide twice.

Manning could not immediately be reached for comment.

Manning most recently attacked law enforcement on National Law Enforcement Day.

Since leaving prison, Manning has become known for controversial tweets, often accompanied with a series of emojis and the hashtag #WeGotThis.
