James Franco won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of Tommy Wiseau in the film The Disaster Artist while Gary Oldman won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern both took home the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a TV Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie, respectively.

The Handsmaid's Tale also lived up to its critical acclaim, winning the award for best TV series (Drama), with Elizabeth Moss also walking away with the best actress trophy for her role in the series.

The film, which stars McDormand as a grieving single mother's anger against an arguably corrupt police department that has failed to solve the case of her daughter's rape and murder, came in with five nominations on the night.
