Lalu Prasad Yadav moves Jharkhand High Court against conviction, seeks bail

It may be mentioned that Lalu Prasad was convicted and sentenced to three and half years jail term in connection with illegal withdrawal of Rs. 89 lacs from the Deoghar treasury when he was the chief minister between 1994-96. Later, they surrendered in the local court which sent them to jail couple of hours before Lalu reached there after his conviction. He was also found guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

JD-U general secretary K C Tyagi said a new political chapter has begun with the court's decision and it means politicians will be afraid of committing any such wrongdoing.

Reacting to the verdict, the BJP and its ally Janata Dal-United said no one was above the law while the RJD claimed its leader fell prey to a "conspiracy" by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the saffron party.

Reports in a section of the media have alleged that District Magistrate Mannan Akhtar and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhairpal Singh of Jalaun had called up CBI Special Judge Shivpal Singh to seek favours for the RJD chief in the fodder scam case.

According to Lalu's counsels, he will be moving the Jharkhand High Court later this week challenging the decision of the CBI court and also file petition for bail. The maximum fine imposed was Rs 10 lakh, slapped on three convicts including Jagdish Sharma, former Public Accounts Committee chairman, while they and three others got the seven years in jail too. The court pronounced its judgement after three days of arguments over the quantum of punishment. He was sentenced to three years and a half of rigorous imprisonment on January 6.

RC68A/96 relates to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.63 crore from Chaibasa Treasury and more than 55 accused persons have been facing trial in the case. Then, the court said that that is why it has recommended their names for Open Jail in Hazaribagh.
