Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) are also a part of the film's main cast. It's reported the role is motion-capture using Reynolds as the character. Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu. Filming is set to begin in London in January. Newton's character, a "sassy journalist", tags along.

Before Reynolds shows up in Detective Pikachu's fedora, he will first return in to cinemas in Deadpool 2, which opens June 1, 2018.
