Deadline for linking Aadhaar likely to be extended to March 31

The government will issue the notification tomorrow, Attorney General K K Venugopal told the top court this morning.

The apex court said that since the main Aadhaar case was due to he heard at the end of November, a stay was not necessary in the current situation. The official also added that once the new deadline will be crossed then the government might cancel all PANs that have not been linked.

Social service schemes: The 135 Total social service scheme including MNREGA, LPG, Ration Card and the beneficiaries should link their Aadhaar Card number on or before December 31, 2017.

The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country.

Dateline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar card, to avail services in the country, has been extended by the Centre till March 31, 2018. "So we need to worry about them", the official said. "So, all the Benami transactions will go", the official said.

Some petitioners in the top court have termed the linking of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) number with bank accounts and mobile numbers as "illegal and unconstitutional". The deadline set earlier by the government was December 31. Other services that would require Aadhaar include mobile phones and banking services.

Keep in mind, that once the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done, you can e-Verify your IT returns using Aadhaar if your mobile is registered with Aadhaar.

The Supreme Court is hearing petitions challenging the government's decision on Aadhaar and has said it may consider setting up a constitution bench to hear pleas challenging the Centre's move to make Aadhaar card mandatory for availing various services and benefits of welfare schemes.
