The Unicode Consortium - the organization that develops the Unicode standard - has proposed new guidelines for the upcoming Unicode 11.0 standard, including a "mechanism" that would allow emoji that explicitly point toward the right or the left to face either direction, according to vendor preference. In addition to the new figures themselves, Unicode 11 also proposes support for reversible emoji.

Burge notes that the changing emoji directions is at "a pretty early stage right now".

'However, that can cause a definite change in meaning when exchanging text across platforms'.
The developer says it's been a long-requested feature, which will only affect the emoji that will "benefit from it the most".
"Final decisions about the 2018 emoji list will be made at the Unicode Technical Meeting in January, with details to be published by the end of Q1 2018."
