So far, at least 12 people have been rescued and admitted to hospital for treatment.

At least 19 people drowned and 10 are missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna river in northern Indian on Thursday, a police officer said.

The boat was reportedly carrying more people than it could accommodate. On getting the information, police reached the spot and started the rescue operation. As many as eight bodies were fished and many others feared dead.

The overcrowded boat was headed to Haryana when the incident occurred.

"The search for remaining 30 others is going on in full swing", the official said.

In another incident, six people died after drowning in river Ganga, in Bihar's Maranchi district.
