The Caribbean Development Bank said Monday it's in the process of providing $200,000 emergency relief grants to Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos.
Hotels and other tourism infrastructure along the eastern island chain known as the Cayos were largely destroyed, though the tourists themselves were evacuated to safer ground ahead of the onrushing Irma.
Elsewhere in the Caribbean, the U.S. has evacuated approximately 1,200 Americans from Dutch-administered St. Marteen in the last 24 hours, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement on Sunday.
The Foreign Secretary said everything possible was being done to help Britons trapped on Caribbean islands that have been devastated by the biggest storm in the region since records began.
"Classified by the experts as the greatest hurricane ever to have formed in the Atlantic, this meteorological phenomenon has caused severe damage to the country, which, precisely because of the storm's wingspan, we still have not been able to quantify", the President said in a statement published on the Internet.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Barbuda was a "scene of total carnage".
The Associated Press reported that Dutch King Willem-Alexander flew to St. Maarten, which shares the island with the French dependency of St. Martin, and toured the heavily damaged Princess Juliana International Airport that is named for his grandmother. Residents were overwhelmed by the damage and said recovery will take time.
In the wake of Irma's destruction, voices like Branson - whose private island, Necker, was also badly damaged - are urging what he calls a "Marshall Plan" for the Caribbean.
In the city of Camaguey, Anaida Morales said she just been through a night from hell with her mom, stepson and husband. The island is home to about 72,000 people.
During an emergency meeting with leaders of the Caribbean Community, immediate needs were identified for those most affected, particularly Barbuda, British Virgin Islands and Anguilla.
"This amount covers damages to homes, vehicles and businesses (including operating losses) that are covered by the natural disaster compensation scheme", CCR said.
Briton Claudia Knight alleged a prison was blown open on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
From there Irma slammed into the French/Dutch Island of St. Martin/St. Maarten, where residents described an even more frightening situation that left four dead.
Puerto Rico continued to provide assistance to USA citizens stranded in St. Thomas and in St. Martin and St. Maarten due to Irma.
Wildlife also suffered, with reports on Facebook of hundreds of flamingos dying on Cayo Coco island.
Now that the clouds are starting to part, it's possible to see the damage from above with satellites.
