The Assembly will also discuss the lines of action and key priorities of the Organization for the two coming years.

On Wednesday September 13, Mounesan will attend the opening ceremony of the 22nd World Tourism Organization General Assembly.

The UNWTO Executive Council, which comprises 33 member states, is the governing body that ensures that the organisation's decisions and recommendations are implemented.

The 22nd General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization will be held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China from September 11 to 16.

Nigeria's election followed the country's unopposed nomination by the UNWTO Commission on Africa (CAF), which met a day earlier.

The 22nd General Assembly will approve candidacy for the post of UNWTO Secretary-General for the period 2018-2021.

The UNWTO was established in 1925 and is based in the Spanish capital of Madrid.

"But I was quite surprised when I got a call that I was being nominated to serve Africa as a Vice President of this General Assembly".

Mr. Mohammed said that he would leverage on the new position to positively affect tourism in Nigeria.

Wang Yang, Vice-Premier of the People's Republic of China, recalled that, since the inclusion of China in UNWTO in 1983, the tourism sector has grown to represent 10% of the country's economy. It was formed by 89 founding members, mainly national tourism associations, tourist enterprises and think tanks from around the world.

"We also see that, more and more, governments and administrations across the world are prioritising tourism to transform their countries for the better".
