Many schools served shelters before and after the storm.

The district plans to use two of the three make-up days that are built into the school calendar, but Brotherton said because the governor declared a state of emergency, there is some chance those days will be forgiven.

Schools will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 13 and Thursday, Sept. 14, while crews continue to assess damages and the community recovers from the hurricane.

"Wednesday will be a normal workday for all our teachers and staff members...then Thursday morning we will welcome all of our 34,000 students back to school". "I can not thank you enough", he said. It is also working to update employees who will be needed to reopen.

The Pinellas County school system has announced it will reopen for classes on Monday, Sept. 18.
