Dead At Nursing Home In Florida Following Hurricane Irma

At least five people have died at a nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief said during a press conference Wednesday morning.

Rescue crews began evacuating the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills early Wednesday to evacuate scores more from the the facility, NBC Miami reports.

"To my knowledge and to my understanding, what I have right now, there's a total of five deaths from the same facility", Sharief said. Police are going to the 42 other assisted living facilities in the area to check on those other residents. The building has been sealed off while police investigate. The nursing home was one of them. Multiple stretchers are also on site.

A tornado destroyed six mobile homes in Palm Bay, and flooding was reported on I-4, which cuts across the middle of the state. A high school in Homestead, a city in which 90 percent of its residents were without electricity on Monday, lost its roof.

"There's nothing we can do", employee Dave Long told WPLG-TV. "We've been calling and calling ..."

Tuesday's low temperature in Hollywood, according to the National Weather Service, was 79 degrees. Check back for updates.
