The RS Monitor on-board telemetry system gets new graphics in a choice of two configurations, displaying your driving performance in real time on the 22cm R-Link 2 screen - or you can connect a camera or smartphone, video your laps and play then back, with your performance data in the image.

Renault has not announced the dynamic characteristics of new items. This is the same motor that appeared in new Alpine A110 coupe, but it has been tweaked to develop 276bhp at 6,000rpm and 390Nm of torque from 2,400rpm. Sport is the base, street-oriented version of the auto, while the Cup version is more of a track toy. The same 1.8-litre turbo will be fitted under the bonnet but power and torque increase to 295bhp and 400Nm respectively; a firmer Cup chassis and 19-inch alloy wheels will come as standard on Trophy models, while the Cup upgrades will be available on the standard Megane RS, too.

Purists will be delighted that, as well as being offered with a six-speed dual-clutch "EDC" automatic transmission, the new Megane RS will also come with the option of a traditional six-speed manual that comes with a REV-match. Performance should be enhanced by the 4CONTROL four-wheel steering.

As well as the choice of suspension, the Renault Sport flagship will also come standard with configurable driving modes, with drivers able to select an Eco, Normal, Sport or Race modes.

“Our engineers step-by step they will see if they can increase the power,” said Patrice Ratti general manager of Renault Sport’s road car division

Renault's hot hatches always perform well.

One cool class-exclusive feature of the Renault Megane R.S. is 4Control four-wheel steering, which should give the vehicle exceptional agility at high speeds. Created to boost agility at low speed and stability at high-speed, the system will be fitted to every model as standard. "The cabin can either be specced with a "'carbon fibre weave" finish, or festooned with Alcantara. Sales begin next year; rivals are all priced at about £30,000 so expect the Megane to join their ranks, starting at about £29,000.

The Megane RS will also be available with both a Sport chassis and a hardcore Cup chassis with all versions coming with all-round hydraulic bump stops.
