Fitbit on Monday announced its first-ever smartwatch - Fitbit Ionic - along with new wireless headphones.

Core features also include a four-day-plus day battery life, automatic activity and sleep tracking, and cross-platform compatibility.

"It's not that we're entering smartwatches for the sake of entering smartwaches", said James Park, CEO of Fitbit, at an event last week.

This looks like a promising new device from Fitbit, but with so many similar smartwatches on the market, it remains to be seen whether it will become a smash hit. And now it's here in the form of the Ionic, a smartwatch with built-in Global Positioning System, waterproofing and a heart-rate monitor. Additional classic accessories for the Ionic will be sold separately for $29.95, with that price tag also being attached to the two-toned breathable Sport Band, Fitbit said, adding that its handmade Horween leather accessories will set you back $59.95 and be available in Midnight Blue and Cognac variants.

Fitbit is having another crack at taking on the likes of Apple, Garmin, and LG with its newly unveiled Ionic smartwatch.

Fitbit has created a range of fitness related apps which are available to download from the AppGallery and a number of third party apps are also available including the social network for runners, Strava and Weather by AccuWeather. You can preorder each item via the Fitbit website.

The Ionic needs to be a big product for Fitbit.

The Fitbit Ionic can be pre-ordered now for $299.99, with shipping starting in October. It is available in three styles - silver gray tracker and clasp with blue gray band, smoke gray tracker and clasp with charcoal band, or burnt orange tracker and clasp with slate blue band.

According to Fitbit, the special edition will, "leverage Adidas' robust performance program expertise", which suggests that the shoe company will provide customized versions of the on-board personal training the Ionic will deliver later this fall.
